Detroit Honors KEM with Street Sign Dedication During the Second Annual KEM Day
Detroit celebrated the remarkable life, music and community impact of R&B artist KEM on Thursday, July 23, during the second annual KEM Day and a special street sign dedication ceremony.
Presented in partnership with the City of Detroit, Mix 92.3 and radio personality Cheron, the celebration took place at 3511 Third Street, near the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Third Street. The location was not chosen simply because it sits in the heart of Detroit. It represents one of the most important chapters in KEM’s life.
During the formal ceremony, the City of Detroit unveiled a secondary street sign honoring KEM, creating a permanent tribute at the same intersection connected to his journey from homelessness and addiction to recovery, international music success and community service.
The Meaning Behind KEM Day
July 23 carries several important meanings for KEM. It is his birthday, the anniversary of his sobriety—known as his “Sober Day”—and the date officially recognized by the City of Detroit as KEM Day.
The celebration honors more than KEM’s accomplishments as a platinum-selling and Grammy-nominated singer. It recognizes the personal transformation behind the music and the way he has used his experiences to encourage and support others.
Before audiences knew him through songs such as “Love Calls,” “I Can’t Stop Loving You,” “Share My Life” and “Nobody,” KEM faced addiction and periods of homelessness on the streets of Detroit. Part of that journey brought him to Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries near MLK Jr. Boulevard and Third Street.
It was during this difficult period that KEM began developing some of the music and ideas that would eventually become part of his debut album, KEMISTRY.
That history made the street sign dedication especially meaningful. A location once associated with struggle is now permanently connected to recovery, purpose and achievement.
The Connection to Mack & Third
The intersection also inspired the name of KEM’s Mack & Third Foundation, an organization created to assist people facing homelessness, hunger, addiction and other serious hardships.
Through the foundation and its charitable initiatives, KEM has helped bring attention and resources to people whose experiences reflect some of the same challenges he once faced.
The foundation’s work demonstrates why KEM Day is not simply a celebration of celebrity. It is also a celebration of service, perseverance and the responsibility to help others after overcoming adversity.
By placing KEM’s name at this location, Detroit has created a visible reminder that a difficult beginning does not have to determine how a person’s story ends.
From Detroit’s Streets to Motown Records
KEM’s journey eventually took him from performing in local venues and independently financing his music to becoming one of the most recognizable voices in contemporary R&B.
He originally released KEMISTRY independently through his own Kemistry Records label. The album and its breakout single, “Love Calls,” attracted the attention of Motown Records, which signed KEM and rereleased the project nationally.
Over the following two decades, KEM built a successful career with Motown, releasing multiple acclaimed albums and earning Grammy nominations, No. 1 Adult R&B records and a loyal international audience.
His smooth vocals, personal songwriting and sophisticated sound helped establish him as an important part of Detroit’s modern musical legacy.
KEM Begins a New Independent Chapter
After approximately 23 years with Motown Records, KEM announced in 2025 that he was leaving the label and beginning a new chapter in his career.
KEM did not leave Motown to sign with another major label. Instead, he returned to his independent roots by relaunching Kemistry Records, the label through which he originally introduced his music before signing with Motown.
The move allows KEM to exercise greater creative control and ownership over his music, business decisions and artistic legacy.
His return to Kemistry Records represents a full-circle moment. The independent label that helped begin his career is now guiding its next chapter.
New music, including “Give My Love” and “Rock With Me,” has helped introduce this independent era while preserving the signature sound his listeners have supported for years.
A Full-Circle Detroit Moment
KEM’s street sign dedication and his return to Kemistry Records share a similar meaning: both connect his future to the places and decisions that helped shape his beginning.
At MLK and Third, Detroit honored the location where KEM experienced some of his greatest challenges and began creating the music that would eventually change his life.
Through Kemistry Records, he has returned to the independent foundation that first allowed him to share that music with the world.
The second annual KEM Day celebrated his birthday, sobriety, musical career, philanthropy and continued connection to Detroit. More importantly, it celebrated the complete journey—from addiction and homelessness to healing, ownership, service and lasting recognition.
For Detroit, the new street sign is more than a marker bearing the name of a successful recording artist. It is a symbol of redemption and a reminder that transformation is possible, regardless of where someone’s story begins.
